To Write Love On Her Arms
To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) is a not-for-profit charity group that helps to support suicide prevention. This group is especially meaningful to me in a few ways. The first being that gay teens are four times more likely to commit suicide because of the lack of acceptance, the amount of hostility towards gay youth and adults, and for the mere fact that they are fundamentally different and less than a heterosexual in the eyes of society. That number jumps to nine times more likely when that questioning or homosexual teenager comes from a rejecting household. It saddens me immensely to think of the countless number of suicides that occur each year due to people’s hate, prejudice, and hostility to things they don’t understand. It’s outrageous and uncalled for.
The next reason I am so apt to help this cause is because of my friend Pennijo. She was a great person– Always fun, laughing, and a great friend to boot. She was a lesbian as well, which just added to her stress. Her parents weren’t the best either, which made the situation even worse. She began cutting herself, and that cutting escalated the more time I knew her. She was hospitilized many times, and a few she was even help because they though she was going to commit suicide. I loved her and tried my best to help her. I gave her my numbers, told her she could call me anytime, day or night, because I wanted her to be able to rely on me to help her.
I know what you’re probably thinking now, that she killed herself. No, Pennijo is alive and well today, but I remember being so afraid that she wouldn’t make it through those times. I’ll do anything to prevent teen suicides and self-destructive behaviors, which is what TWLOHA is all about. Even if we save just one life, won’t that make everything worthwile?
All it take is a few moments of your time to help. Click the “Help Now!” button on the SocialVibe widget on the right sidebar. Watch the Video by Sprint or do the quick activity- It’s at most fourty-five seconds long. Rate the video, and then the sponser will donate a small amount to TWLOHA. See? Easy as pie.
I really feel passionately about this cause; I hope you will, too. Spread the word. Bookmark this page on Delicious and other social bookmarking sites. Paste this link on Facebook. It’ll take someone two minutes out of their day to help support suicide prevention. My goal is to raise ten or more hours of online crisis and suicide prevention. Please, help!
Thanks for helping, and know that you’re making a difference in someone’s life.
Nick
